Can I grow Avocado's in EverGrow Bags?

We have customers growing Avocado's in our bags, and they are starting to produce fruit. We are unsure as of yet how they will continue to fruit but it is looking very promising.

Why Choose EverGrow Bags for Your Avocado Trees?

  • Excellent Drainage: EverGrow Bags are perfect for areas with clay soil. When placed above ground, these bags provide excellent drainage, helping to prevent root rot and other issues.

  • Space Management: Planting avocado trees in EverGrow Bags allows for better control of their size and growth, making them ideal for small backyards.

  • Customizable Growth: You can experiment with different planting methods. For example, a 40-litre bag can be placed partially above ground or in a raised bed for improved drainage and root management.

Choosing the Right Bag Size

  • 40-Litre Bags: Ideal for compact growth, but regular watering and care are necessary.

  • 80-Litre Bags: Better for maintaining even moisture levels and supporting larger crops. However, these bags require additional staking or support to manage the tree's canopy.

Tips for Growing Avocados in EverGrow Bags

  • Soil Selection: Use a light, free-draining medium rather than garden soil to avoid root rot.

  • Pruning: Regular pruning is essential to maintain the desired tree size. This is especially important if you're not growing a dwarf variety.

  • Fertilization: Provide regular liquid feed and foliar feed to ensure your trees stay healthy and productive.

Foliar Feeding Recipe:

  • 2 teaspoons of Fish Emulsion (or water-soluble fertilizer)
  • 2 teaspoons of Molasses
  • 2 teaspoons of Seaweed
  • Mix in 1 litre of water and spray on leaves every two weeks for best results.

Cooler Climate Avocado Selection Criteria

If you live in a cooler climate, it's crucial to choose the right avocado variety. Here are some tips:

  • Late-Season Flowering: Opt for varieties that flower in late November or early December when nights are warmer.

  • Precocious Varieties: Choose trees that begin bearing fruit in 2 years, rather than waiting 5-8 years.

  • Small Tree Size: Look for varieties that grow under 3 meters in height.

Growing Tips for Healthy Avocados

  • Drainage is Key: Avocados are sensitive to root rot, so ensure you plant them in free-draining soil.

  • Protect from Frost: Avocados need warmth, so protect them from frosts, especially in the first 3-5 years.

  • Shelter from Winds: Young trees need shelter from strong winds. Consider planting them in a protected area or providing windbreaks.

  • Maximize Yields: If space permits, plant both A-type and B-type flowering avocados to improve pollination and fruit yield.

Additional Considerations

  • Heavy Lifting: A filled 80-litre bag can be heavy. Consider bags with handles for easier moving.

  • Espaliering Option: For larger trees in 80-litre bags, espaliering (supporting branches like a grapevine) can help manage canopy weight and encourage root growth within the bag.

By following these guidelines and choosing the right EverGrow Bag, you can enjoy a bountiful avocado harvest, even in less-than-ideal conditions. Happy growing!
