How To Choose What Size Bag

Bag size and pruning are your main controls of the tree's final size. Vigour differs between species, and growth is affected by many factors, but in general, a bag below ground will support a leaf canopy around 10 times the size of the bag.

Size Guide:

10 Litre Bag:

  • Suitable for small ornamental trees, bulbs, flowers, and herbs.
  • Ideal for inside ornate pots.
  • Note: The 10L size is too small for most fruit trees.

20 Litre Bag:

  • Perfect for fruit trees, berries, ornamentals, bulbs, and vegetables.
  • Creates a compact fruit tree with maximum fruit and flower production.
  • Easy to tend, birdnet, and harvest without the need for ladders.

30 Litre & 40 Litre Bags:

  • Best for larger fruit trees, berries, ornamentals, bulbs, and vegetables.
  • Allows your tree to grow bigger while still controlling its size and encouraging maximum fruiting.
  • Great sizes for blueberries.

80 Litre Bag:

  • Best for larger trees, berries, ornamentals, bulbs and vegetables.
  • Best for when you want to grow above ground as holds more moisture.
  • Allows your trees to grow bigger trunks while still controlling size and encouraging maximum fruiting.
  • Great for larger fruits like persimmon that need bigger wood structure to support the heavy fruit sizes.
  • Great size for avocado’s and figs, above ground.

Above-Ground vs. Below-Ground:

Above ground, there is more growth restriction as the roots cannot access the surrounding soil. Roots above ground tend to get hotter and drier, requiring more regular care. For bags kept above ground, we recommend choosing a bag size larger as this provides the roots with more room and a bigger volume to hold moisture longer. Bags kept above ground have stronger root restriction, so choosing one size bigger for long-term above-ground use is advisable.
